The production pass (7ed2ac4e, E32) asked "is this export used by what
ships?". No real hit: its only findings were 37 exports a test imports,
answered with 36 `@internal` JSDoc tags (E34 S2) — test-only exports, not
defects. Since then it has only ever asked for another tag. The tags go
with it (36, no longer read by anything), and so do the production-only
`!…!` exclusions in knip.jsonc and their register rows. Plain knip (unused
files, exports and dependencies) keeps running in the gate.
E2EE direct messages, the chat dock, the Messages module, the message
WebSocket and its realtime registry, and the messages / message_keys
tables (migration 0097; the downgrade restores the empty schema). Prod
held two welcome notes, no message between people and one key — never
used (owner decision, E34). WebSocket now has no owner module: the lint
bans it everywhere. Privacy policy updated: it no longer promises E2EE
for a feature that is gone.
The Gitea Actions gate repeated, after the merge, what a release already runs
before it, and its runner shared the git host's container: one run there
starved Gitea of memory until it stopped answering. The lanes now live in
scripts/check.sh, run the same by the release dispatcher and by hand, and the
gate-contract test holds its lines (the ruff and pip-audit checks read it
instead of the workflow). The two audits only CI ran join the gate: pip-audit
over the lock (pinned in the test image, blocking at any severity) and npm
audit of the production dependencies. The engine contracts drop the CI
containers; the register records that pushes have no server-side gate.
The register test detected narrowings by modelling config shapes, and each
review round found one more shape it did not model (a basePath global ignore,
a rule src never declares, a widened glob filed under a narrow row, a substring
check on a CI line, knip.json beside knip.jsonc). It now compares instead:
gates.snapshot.json holds ESLint's effective config for every code file and the
lines that run each lane, and any difference fails until it is regenerated.
The register is read off the snapshot's configs, which surfaced the ui/ and
lib/ test scopes the sampling never reached.
The complexity ratchet also names a wrapped function by its binding
(const onSave = useCallback(() => ...)), not as "useCallback callback".
react-hooks/refs 245 -> 31 hits and 93 -> 29 skipped functions in the register and the eslint
comment. The canonical-patterns table gets the latest-value row (useEffectEvent; a handler or timer:
useLatest / useStableCallback, never a render-phase ref write) and the popover / scroll-fade row
(destructure the ref setter).
docs/gates.md lists every place a gate deliberately checks less than it
could, each with its reason and the count measured when the row was
written:
- an ESLint rule off, at warn, or not applied, by scope;
- a weak compiler flag, a ruff ignore, the basedpyright mode and baseline;
- a knip exclusion, a lane that does not run everywhere;
- an accepted CVE.
gates.contract.test.ts reads the EFFECTIVE configuration and fails when a
narrowing has no row:
- ESLint's computed config per scope;
- the three tsconfigs, ruff.toml, pyrightconfig, pytest.ini and knip.jsonc;
- .trivyignore.yaml, where an entry also needs a statement and an expiry;
- CI's pip-audit ignores.
It also pins `--max-warnings 0`, which is what makes a warn-level rule fail.
Seen red on a missing row, a new `off` rule and an allowlist entry without
an expiry.
CLAUDE.md gains the rule E32 exists for: a gate with any real hit is never
switched off or narrowed, and an "enforced by" comment is checked by running
the check. The gate descriptions there, in docs/development.md and in
backend/app/README.md name the lanes as they now are, and the "directly"
recipe points at the full list.
The Postgres image is Alpine, whose en_US.utf8 is byte order: "Életrajzi" and
"Ötödik" sorted after "Zorró" in the feed, the channel lists, the Plex grid,
its genres and collections. `app/collation.py` names the ICU collation of the
reader's language (hu-x-icu puts "Ö" after "O" and "Cs" after "Cu"), wraps
every text ORDER BY with it - the feed's keyset cursor compares with the same
expression, so paging walks the order it sorted in - and orders the lists built
in Python (genre and studio facets, collection members, the discovery re-sort)
through the same collation. Plex title tiebreaks use the shown (HU) title.
CLAUDE.md, DESIGN.md and ui/README said a raw <button> is allowed anywhere in components/ui/; the
lint rule allows it only in BUTTON_PRIMITIVES (and refuses a bare FocusSafeButton elsewhere too).
The focus-safe rule's message no longer points feature code at FocusSafeButton. The README's
'actions & inputs' row was split in two by a stray line break.
The probe re-run over the 15 pages at 1920x1080 found every button, icon
button, chip, field, tab, segment and menu row drawn by its primitive
except the S3h Plex picture, a div with the button role. It is a
Pressable now, and the button-primitive lint rule refuses an element
with role="button" outside the control primitives.
- SegmentedToggle defaults to the toolbar rung (28, text-xs): the old
small default had put the pager's page sizes and the YouTube result
count on 10px type beside 28px buttons. The Plex match toggle asks
for the small rung explicitly.
- The language badge on the rail uses text-3xs (was an 8px one-off);
the Plex playlist's watched mark and the Home hero's length use
MEDIA_BADGE instead of hand-copied classes.
- A media picture shows the pointer whether it is a link or a button.
- DESIGN.md: a Conformance chapter (the four-step check before a UI
change is done, with the S3g baseline), the segmented rung, two log
rows. CLAUDE.md points at the check.
- ui/Input, Textarea, InnerInput + fieldClass (A4): the >= 3:1 edge, a 2px accent
focus edge, the danger edge for invalid, md/sm/xs/heading rungs, 1rem and 44 on touch
- ui/SelectTrigger (A5): SortControl, FilterSelect, the view switcher and the date
filter on one trigger, a pill in a toolbar, r8 in a form
- ui/NativeControls (A6): Checkbox, CheckRow, Slider, ColorInput
- every raw input swept (~100 sites); inputCls retired; local/input-primitive
- useReturnFocus: an in-place editor hands the focus back to its trigger on
Enter/Escape (the playlist and Plex title renames, the priority number);
the Plex playlist rename gains Escape and an accessible name
- back to top: a round 48 FAB (owner decision); DESIGN.md A2 and the log
The second half of the button sweep: the remaining hand-rolled buttons in
feature components, the design lab and the components/ui composites now
stand on Button, IconButton, Pressable, Chip or DragHandle.
- Chip + DismissibleChip (filter / token / tag / suggest / ghost, 24px
floor, 44 on touch) replace five chip geometries; FilterChipGroup
renders Chips; overflow lanes measure a mirror painted by chipClass.
- The Plex control row is IconButton's player rung (36, 20px glyph,
round, overlay; 44 on touch); the YT modal bar is on the sm rung with
pressed cycle toggles and names that survive a folded label.
- New variants: IconButton ghost-accent, danger-soft; Button warn on a
new state-warn utility. The .btn-{tone} recipes and btnCls are gone.
- Fixed on the way: membership rows (collection editor, Plex playlist
add) announce checked/mixed; a one-letter tag chip was 21px wide;
descriptionLinks moved out of lib/ (it renders components).
- local/button-primitive: a raw <button>/<FocusSafeButton> outside the
control-primitive files is a lint error (contract-tested, seen red).
Button is rebuilt to A1/B1/B3: explicit heights (xs 24 / sm 28 / md 32, lg 40 for a hero CTA), r8 (a
pill on media), state layers instead of opacity and bg-card hovers, a `pressed` toggle, `overlay`,
`media` and `link-muted` variants. The icon-only sizes move to the new IconButton (28 / 32, 48 only for
the Play on a picture; a required label). Pressable (a card, row or tile that is the control) and
DragHandle join them. The state-* utilities now stand down on a disabled, busy or pressed control, held
by theme.contract.test.ts.
Swept onto them: the Button icon-size callers and 16 files (Plex playlist, Plex detail, the YT player
modal chrome, Welcome, Plex and video cards with AddToPlaylist and DownloadButton, the video editor,
Feed, personal views, Scheduler, Users, the nav rail, Plex detail parts, Settings): 268 raw buttons are
153. Fixed on the way: FocusSafeButton overwrote a caller's aria-disabled (the "unavailable, here is
why" state; adminInvites caught it), a season toggle and a Plex settings switch had no name/state, and
the video card's overlay follows the C5 card (Resume pill, From the start pill, a round Play).
C1-C4 as proposed: the action classification, overlay-drawer side panels,
touch-first players, dialog focus by purpose with a pinned footer. The
players were then played live at tablet size, which found the Plex
control row running off-screen below 1024; how it fits is open as C5.
CLAUDE.md now points at DESIGN.md.
The module admitted its two opt-outs under a stated rule — "both enforce their own
limit on the bytes they actually read, which is what makes opting them out safe" —
and that rule is false for one of them. `POST /api/downloads/upload` declares
`file: UploadFile = File(...)`, so FastAPI parses and spools the whole multipart
part to a temp file BEFORE the first dependency runs, `require_human` included:
its in-handler cap measures bytes that have already landed. Measured on the
installed fastapi 0.141.1 / starlette 1.6.0 — starlette's max_part_size guards
non-file parts only, so an anonymous chunked upload was bounded by nothing. In the
shipped self-host compose that lands in a RAM-backed tmpfs.
The exposure predates SEC-20 (no route was capped before it); what this branch
added was the claim. So the list becomes a mapping of per-route CEILINGS instead
of a set of exemptions: every request now gets a finite number, the upload route's
being the same one the route itself enforces. `sysconfig`'s knob is bounded by it
so an admin cannot raise the handler's cap past the edge and start collecting 413s
from a layer the admin page never mentions — held by a test, not by prose.
Two more things the review caught in the same module:
The 413 was not byte-identical to `capped_body`'s after all. `json.dumps` puts
spaces where JSONResponse does not, and the test that promised to hold them
together compared PARSED JSON, so it could never have seen it. Built through the
same JSONResponse now, and compared as raw bytes.
And the middleware sat outside CORS and the security headers, so its 413 carried
neither — on the split-origin dev setup the browser drops it and the user gets a
generic network failure instead of the translated too_large, while the identical
refusal from capped_body one layer down renders fine. It moves to just inside
CORS: still ahead of the session, the setup gate and every auth dependency.
Also corrected: the docblock's "largest non-exempt body is 64 KiB, ~16x headroom"
(it is 512 KiB and 2x — the diagnostics sink, named eleven lines further down),
and CLAUDE.md's Request SIZE row, which forbade the one correct use of
capped_body that is actually in the tree.
Closes the burn-down. Hook suppressions 113 -> 34, `exhaustive-deps` 45 -> 2 (the target was
<10), and every one of the 34 survivors is an inline directive NAMING the invariant it
protects. The suppressions file is deleted, because a bulk file hides the next violation
instead of answering it — and it cannot hold a warning-level rule at all.
The sprint plan's three verdicts missed the answer that turned out to be the most common one:
adjust the state DURING RENDER. React re-runs the component and discards that pass rather than
committing it, so the stale frame an effect-based reset paints does not exist. Applied to the
Plex player's up-next card, the playlist view reset, the feed's optimistic overrides, the
channel banner's retry count, the download center's tab guard, the Plex search highlight, the
comfort-pin latch, Welcome's per-view outcome and the card pager's page clamp. It is legal only
for a component's own state — PlexBrowse's language commit resets PlexProvider's filters, so
that one stays an effect and says why.
Mirrors of a prop or query became derived values or `draft ?? server`:
- `downloadRow` had ui/Avatar's defect exactly — a boolean "poster failed" that an effect reset,
in rows recycled down a virtualized list, so one job's missing poster painted over the next
one's for a frame. Keyed by URL now.
- Scheduler's two number editors held a mirror an effect re-synced, on a page that POLLS — the
shape a poll can overwrite mid-edit. A draft while editing, the server's value otherwise; six
tests where there were none, the one behavioural change (the save button stops being dirty at
commit rather than at the echo) mutation-checked.
- SetupWizard's "no token" and WatchPage's "gone" are facts about the URL, so they are seeded and
derived rather than pushed into state by an effect that had to commit first.
Elsewhere: PlexInfo's rating chip was a component declared during render — a new component type
every render, so React remounted the subtree and dropped the focus on its filter button. Hoisted.
Feed's undo action and PlexPlayer's session reclaim both re-entered their own useCallback, which
the checker reads as a forward reference; both go through the ref idiom this file already uses.
BootGate's dep list was load-bearing for correctness — a re-run meant `location.reload()` — so
the "already adopted THIS identity" comparison now enforces it in code, with a test that fails
without it (the existing reload tests all install their spy too late to catch it).
One correction to the batch before this: keying ChatThread's and Messages' decrypt passes on
`q.data` instead of `q.dataUpdatedAt` was wrong. react-query's structural sharing makes it safe
in production, but the component must not melt down when something hands back a fresh object per
render — and Messages.keyboard.dom.test does exactly that, so the effect span the suite. Both are
back on the fetch as the trigger with the payload behind a ref, which is honest AND loop-proof;
the replaced comment had warned about precisely this.
CLAUDE.md gains four canonical-patterns rows for the above, and its "React 18" line is now true.
Three tsc projects held the frontend and NOTHING held the backend: ~36k
lines of `app/`, annotated in 113 of 128 files, that no lane had ever
read. Asymmetric by accident, not by decision.
basedpyright, in basic mode. Measured against mypy on this tree with the
dependencies actually installed — without them basedpyright errors on
every import and mypy's --ignore-missing-imports quietly turns them into
Any and UNDER-reports. Both land ~190-200 errors with the same
distribution, so the choice fell to what differs: basedpyright is ~2x
faster (4.4s vs 7.4s, and this runs on every `siftlode lint`), resolves
our `app.*` imports from its own config with no MYPYPATH, and has a
first-class `--writebaseline`. That last one is the ratchet itself;
mypy would have needed a third-party tool for it.
198 pre-existing errors are baselined, so the lane fails on NEW errors
only and the list burns down epic by epic. A green lane means no new
damage, not a clean codebase.
It runs in the pytest test image rather than on the host, and that is
forced rather than chosen: `requirements.lock` cannot be installed on
Windows at all — uvloop refuses to build there — so a host venv could
only ever be the lock minus a package, and a type checker without the
real third-party packages reports nonsense rather than nothing. The
image installs the pin from requirements-dev.txt, so the lane's version
IS the pin and there is no host copy to drift. The cost is that
`siftlode lint` now needs Docker, which it did not before.
FastAPI reads a declared body IN FULL before the first dependency, so
`POST /auth/password-login` drained an arbitrary upload from an anonymous
caller and only then answered 401. 70 of the 72 body-declaring routes
behaved the same way: one unauthenticated client could spend the
process's memory and time at will.
A raw ASGI middleware, not `@app.middleware("http")` — BaseHTTPMiddleware
cannot wrap `receive`, so it could only trust `Content-Length`, which a
client may omit (chunked) or understate. This refuses an oversized
declaration outright and counts the bytes of everything else as they
arrive, the same rule `capped_body` already applies per-route. Registered
directly inside the access log: a refusal is still logged with its
request id, but the session, CORS, the setup gate and every auth
dependency never run for a body that is already too large.
Two routes opt out, under one stated rule: an exemption is ONLY for a
route whose own cap is larger than the global one. That is why
`/api/diagnostics/events` is absent — it caps itself at 512 KiB, below
the ceiling, so exempting it could only widen what it accepts. The list
names route templates and a test resolves each against the live route
table, so a rename fails the gate instead of silently dropping an
exemption in prod.
The 413 is byte-identical to `capped_body`'s and the test compares the
two against each other rather than against a literal — two shapes for one
fact is how the `cancelled`/`canceled` bug happened.
After Stop (or at the cap, or from Settings → Diagnosztika's past sessions)
one dialog drafts the issue: title, description, the steps drafted from the
session's markers and page changes (a marker without a label is named by its
time), the environment (version, browser, system, window, language). Beside
it, what goes with it: the browser and server logs — each reviewable line by
line, an unticked line is not sent — and the screenshots, removable, with
paste / drop / pick to add more.
- it saves as it goes (debug_sessions.draft, migration 0090): the rendered
markdown in the user's language, the excluded rows, and its own fields to
reopen as it was; a sent session is read-only
- the zip export (issue.md, client.log, server.log, screenshots) is built
from the saved draft by app/issues/bundle.py — the one definition the Gitea
delivery (S4) will share; .log, not .jsonl, which Gitea refuses
- the log line's level tags and clock move to components/logLineParts so the
review list draws a level the way both log viewers do
A session is one recording, capped at 60 minutes by the server. While it is
open, a request naming the caller's own session in X-Debug-Session is logged
at the session's level with every line tagged; a header naming anything else
is ignored. The browser's batches count a session as consent to its level and
keep the tag only on its own events. Screenshots are judged by their bytes,
capped in size and count, and served back to their owner only.
- debug_sessions / debug_screenshots tables, one open session per user
(partial unique index), log_events.debug_session_id indexed
- /api/debug-sessions: start (joins a running one), stop, list, get, events,
screenshots; /api/me reports the live session
- the hourly log job closes expired sessions and drops them with the logs
- logsink.serialize and routes._common.capped_body shared by their readers
- The palette launcher's name replaced its visible "Jump to…" (and the key cap's its "Ctrl K"):
a voice-control "click Jump to" matched nothing (WCAG 2.5.3). Each name contains its text now.
- SegmentedToggle's `title` was only a tooltip on a non-focusable box — the live search's "how
many per batch" hint reached no keyboard or screen-reader user. It is the group's accessible
description, standalone and captioned alike.
- The unused-key contract let a template like `card.${status}` cover its whole namespace, which hid
five dead keys (deleted). Dynamic keys are matched by shape (`editor.*.hint`); a bare namespace
shape covers nothing, and the audit/quota namespaces are now held both ways by backendIds.
- CLAUDE.md's "FE control" row matches the lint rule it cites; each no-restricted-syntax entry has
its reason directly above it.
Two rows of the canonical-patterns table had drifted, found while closing the roadmap audit:
- 63 mutation responses carried no `ok` — `{"unsubscribed": true}`, `{"status": "ok"}`,
`{"added": 3, …}` and so on. Each now leads with `"ok": true` (additive: every field a client
reads is still there).
- Twelve route helpers committed on their own. Six were just the end of their handler's work and now
flush: the playlist item add/remove and Watch later get-or-create, the Plex series/season bulk
mark, and the invite decision + account activation — which an approval used to land in separate
transactions. The other six commit on purpose (a token durable before its link is mailed, a
single-use token burned as its own unit, the Google callback's tail, a background registration
with its own session, the staged search ingest around YouTube calls), each listed with its reason.
`tests/test_route_conventions.py` holds both rules in code; CLAUDE.md's two rows point at it.
A user can raise their diagnostics level to Részletes (DEBUG) or Teljes (TRACE) for 24 hours from a
new Settings tab, after a consent box that says what is recorded, that the server keeps it and for
how long (the instance's own retention), and that it lapses. Alap is the base and needs no consent.
- users.diagnostics_level/_until (migration 0087), written only by PUT /api/me/diagnostics, which
computes the expiry itself; the demo account cannot raise it. /api/me reports the level in force.
- The server logs an elevated user's requests at that level and stores every line of them
(logs.LevelGate on the stdout handler and the sink; the root is lowered only while an elevation
is active). Teljes adds the redacted query string to the request line.
- POST /api/diagnostics/events stores the browser's log as source=web rows: account from the
session, body capped while streaming, events/attrs capped, re-redacted, events under the
consented level dropped, timestamps clamped, 30 batches a minute, 409 once the level lapsed.
- lib/diagnostics.ts applies the level to the tab and streams only what happens after consent, in
batches, never its own request lines, with a keepalive flush on pagehide; stops on lapse (its
own timer), on withdrawal and on 409.
- Detail hooks at DEBUG: which control was clicked (test id, icon, app copy in English — never user
text, input values or a link's query), visibility/bfcache/resize, filter changes
(lib/filterLog.ts; typed search only at TRACE), player events (lib/mediaLog.ts; media errors are
warnings at every level). Offline/online at the base level.
- "Saját napló" viewer: live, newest first, level groups with counts, search, row details, copy
the filtered events as JSON lines, clear.
- Privacy policy and Terms exist in Hungarian and English (a contract test holds both languages to
the same sections); the policy now describes the server logs and diagnostic logging, self-service
deletion and password sign-in.
Fixed on the way:
- A sync auth dependency ran logs.set_user on a copied context, so the account never reached a
handler's own log lines (measured); a per-request mutable scope carries it now.
- The Settings tab rail left a phone no room (clipped labels, buttons over text): below `sm` it is
a scrolling row above the content.
- PUT /api/me/preferences took a bare dict body; it is a Pydantic model now.
The browser now keeps its half of the one event shape logs.py defines:
lib/log.ts is a levelled, redacted, bounded (2000 events) in-memory ring
with the server's level names and severity numbers. Nothing leaves the
browser yet; sending is the consented diagnostics level (S5).
- lib/http.ts `send` is the one fetch: every request carries an
X-Request-Id and becomes one http.request event. The server echoes the
matched route template in X-Route (only for a matched route, so a raw
path with a value in it is never sent back); without one the client
templates the path itself. req, beacon, the upload XHR, the public
watch page and the legal pages all go through it.
- Hooks: app start snapshot, uncaught errors and rejections, History
push/replace/popstate (a scroll-only replace is not an event; parameter
values only at DEBUG, typed search only at TRACE), notifications, the
error dialog, the crash boundary, failed queries and mutations (key
head only), and the messages socket (lifecycle, frame types at DEBUG).
- Redaction is one contract: backend/tests/fixtures/log_redaction_cases.json
runs against both redact() implementations.
- Lint: fetch, XMLHttpRequest and WebSocket each belong to one logging
module, console to none; a contract test proves the rules fire.
Fixes a socket takeover: the close of a socket released by the last
subscriber cleared the newer socket a quick re-subscribe had opened and
scheduled a third, leaving two live sockets that delivered every message
twice (measured in Chromium: 3 created / 2 live before, 2 / 1 after).
The log now has a stored, queryable copy for the diagnostics console:
every WARNING and above plus the request line of every request, kept
for log_retention_days (default 7, no "forever") and pruned hourly by
the new log_gc job.
Rows are built on the logging thread from the same redacted fields as
the stdout line, queued without blocking and written in batches by one
background thread on its own connection. A full queue or a failed write
drops and reports instead of retrying. Flood control keeps 30 of any
one message per minute plus a count of the rest; anonymous request
lines are capped at 60 a minute per client, and the client address is
never stored. Deleting an account deletes its stored events.
Measured on prod first: a YouTube RSS outage wrote 11k warnings in four
hours, one per channel per poll. The poll now writes one warning with
per-reason counts and a few examples, and a failure on our side gets
one traceback per poll instead of one per channel.
Owner answers to the E11 S5 raises (2026-09-13): 1 → A, 2 → "Feed" in every language, 3 → translate the
proxy label and fix every config key missing in BOTH languages ("maintenance", "tmdb" — old bugs).
Focus across a view change (1-A). Opening a Plex title from Home's rail, a channel from the Channels
table or a title from a Plex grid switches the page or the sub-view, which unmounts the list; Back used
to hand focus to <body>, so the next `j` started over at the top. The YouTube player (an overlay)
already restored onto the card.
- `lib/listNav`: `navPosition()` (list's place in reading order, the page's list count, item index)
and `restoreNavPosition()`: focuses the item once the page has as many lists on screen as when it was
left, polls on a timer (a hidden tab runs no animation frames), gives up after 2 s or at once when
something already holds focus, focuses without scrolling (the scroll restore owns the position).
- `lib/history`: `rememberNavPosition()` stamps `sfNav` onto the entry being left and returns the state
without it (a new entry must not inherit it); one popstate listener restores and spends the stamp,
so a later landing on the same entry (an overlay closing over it) cannot pull focus to an old item.
- Called before every view push: `setPage`, `openChannel`, `enterYtSearch`, `useHistorySubview.open`,
the Channels tab push. `navPosition.wiring.contract.test` fails on any `history.pushState(` without
it (the overlay stack's own push is the one exemption).
"Feed" (2). The module is "Feed" in both languages: every "hírfolyam" in the Hungarian UI (≈45 strings,
suffixed: Feedből, Feeded, Feedben…) and the prose "feed" in English that means the module ("your
Feed", "Hide from Feed"); "RSS feed" keeps its meaning. The welcome email says it too.
Backend ids without a name (3). The Configuration page showed `maintenance`, `tmdb`,
`maintenance_revalidate_batch`, `download_upload_max_bytes`, `audit_retention_days`, `plex_overlay_map`,
`tmdb_api_key` and `tmdb_language` as raw identifiers — the lookup falls back to the id, and the i18n
parity test stayed green because both languages missed the same keys. Added labels + hints (EN/HU),
the two groups (and their tab order), the missing `scheduler.jobDesc.demo_reset`, removed the stale
`plex_sync_interval_min` field, and "YouTube API kimenő proxy". `i18n/backendIds.contract.test` reads
`sysconfig.SPECS`, `scheduler.JOB_INTERVALS` and the audit/quota action enums from the backend sources
and fails on an id without its name in either language, or a name left for an id the backend dropped.
Second slice of the E11 keyboard layer (S4b). S4a gave the feed, the library and the channel page
`j`/`k`, the arrows and Enter; Home's shelves and the whole Plex module were still Tab-stop country —
a Plex poster is its own Tab stop, and a rail's cards sat behind every control of the cards before.
- `lib/listNav`: a list that mounts every item no longer declares a count or columns — both are
measured off the DOM when a key is pressed, so an auto-fill grid's columns follow its width and a
rail is one row. ↑ on a list's top row and ↓ on its bottom row go on to the neighbouring list, onto
the item horizontally nearest the one left (owner decision D4: ←→ within a rail, ↑↓ to the rail
above or below). The first `j` skips cards a rail has scrolled out to the left.
- `Carousel keyboardNav` registers the scroller; the scroller gets a 4px inset (against a -4px margin,
layout unchanged) so the focus ring is not clipped, and `[data-nav-index]` a 2.5rem inline scroll
margin so a card stepped into view clears the rail's edge fade and paging arrow.
- `ui/NavGrid`: the plain, fully mounted grid that registers itself.
- `navIndex` on PlexPosterCard / SeasonCard / EpisodeCard (the card root is the item, the poster the
open element — the ring goes round poster and title, D2), PosterTile and Home's ShelfTile (the button
is the item); cast, related and collection-strip buttons carry the attrs directly.
- Wired: Home's comfort and resume rails; Plex Browse titles + episodes, Discover rails + genres,
collection view, playlists/collections browse, person known-for + filmography, show seasons, season
episodes, cast/related strips, info-page cast + collection strips.
- `listNav.wiring.contract.test`: every `Carousel` says `keyboardNav`, every card says `navIndex`, and a
card with `navIndex` sits inside a NavGrid / Carousel / VirtualGrid — both halves are opt-in, and
either one missing leaves a list the keyboard silently skips.
A feed card cost ~10 Tab stops, so the tenth card sat ~135 Tabs from the top of the page, and the
only keyboard focus ring (a 60% accent outline on the thumbnail) all but vanished on the dark glass.
First slice of the E11 keyboard layer (S4a); Home, Plex and the tables follow in S4b/S4c.
- `lib/listNav`: one window listener over every registered list, walked in document order. `j`/`k`
step item to item (on into the next list — owner decision D4), the arrows move around a grid, Enter
clicks the item's own `data-nav-open` element, so it opens exactly like a click. An item root is
never a Tab stop: it gets `tabindex=-1` only while the keyboard is on it, and keeps it until the next
item takes it, so the player's focus restore lands back on the card. The first `j` takes the first
card you can see, not the top of the list.
- `VirtualGrid` takes part with `keyboardNav` (column count + scrolling an unmounted row in);
`VirtualFeed` turns it on, so the feed, the library and the channel page all have it.
- Keymap: two-step sequences (`g h`) whose pending step belongs to the scope that started it; the
page-level scopes (`page`, `search`, `list`) are quiet while a layer that owns the keyboard is open,
enforced in `dispatch`. A test pins the owner's rule that none of them needs a modifier on the
Hungarian layout.
- `g h/f/c/p/x/n/m/d/s/,` jump to a module this account can reach; `s` focuses the header search box
and selects the old query; Escape in it hands the keyboard back to the page (Plex's typeahead spends
its first Escape on its panel).
- Hover popovers are passive layers: an open tooltip still takes Escape first but no longer silences
the page keys.
- Focus ring (owner decision D2 = B): solid 2px accent around the whole item; the app-wide button/
link/row ring goes from 60% to solid too. The item keeps a transparent resting outline because the
video card transitions `all` — without it every `j` flashed a 3px white ring (measured in Chrome).
- Help sheet: the new keys, in a fixed order after the surface's own; a `g` chord only for a reachable
module; opened over a player or dialog it leaves out the page-level keys and the context-menu key,
which nothing can reach there (the latter pre-existing since E10).
- CLAUDE.md: a canonical-patterns row for list/grid keys (`useListNav` + `navItemAttrs` +
`data-nav-open`, not a private arrow-key handler).
Typing "theme" put the channel "The Meltzone Podcast" (matched only through its handle
`@themeltzone`) above every "Theme: …" row, and Enter opened the channel — the palette listed
matches in pure group order and always highlighted the first one.
- CommandPalette ranks each word: label starts with it > elsewhere in the label > only the hint,
keywords or group name; an item ranks by its worst word, then the sum. The group order stays
fixed, rows are ranked inside each group, and the best row overall starts highlighted. The
highlight is held by id and follows the best match until the arrows or the pointer pick a row,
so a channel list landing mid-typing no longer shifts it.
- A11y: result groups are `role="group"` named by their heading; `aria-expanded` is false with
nothing to choose; the listbox stays mounted (hidden) so `aria-controls` never names a missing
element, and "Nothing matches" sits outside it; a polite status announces the count once the
typing pauses.
- `Column`/`FilterMap`/`filterRows`/`isActive` move from `ui/tableHeader` to `lib/tableColumns`,
and the player's auto/loop modes from `playerModalControls` to `lib/playerModes` — three lib
helpers imported the column contract from a ui component, and `playerModalHooks` its types from a
feature component.
- eslint: `lib/` may not import from `components/` at any depth, type-only and re-exports included;
the boundary contract test proves it fires. CLAUDE.md and the ui README say so.
- keymap: `dispatch`'s docblock sat stacked on `matchesShortcut`'s; moved onto `dispatch`.
`req` opens its blocking dialog for 400/409/422/5xx only. A 403/404/429 was left to the caller and a
502-504 or lost connection got just the self-clearing connection notice, so 34 mutations without a
reporting onError and 15 direct api writes with a bare or missing catch failed in silence: a hidden
channel that snapped back, a share link that never revoked, a confirmed account delete that ended
with nothing said.
- lib/queryClient: one MutationCache reporter. react-query awaits it BEFORE the mutation's own
onError, so it waits a task and skips a failure the site already reported; the toast title comes
from `meta.failTitle`, `meta.errorShownInline` opts out.
- notifyActionError: title names WHAT failed, the line under it says WHY (`failureReason`: a
structured localized detail, else the status). It marks the error reported (`markReported`), so
nothing reports one failure twice; `notifyKnownFailure` for a site's own specific sentence.
- Every silent site named (45 new HU/EN titles, 4 reasons). Stale "the global dialog shows it"
comments corrected on the job actions, channel block, Plex sync, cookies, download enqueue,
account delete and usePref.
- Channels passed the tag hook's channel id to the reporter as the error; the tag and priority hooks
now report themselves, with the real error.
- A contract test keeps every useMutation naming its failure; CLAUDE.md gains the pattern row.
- history.dom.test: the "navigates only once the entries are back" assertion raced an async act's
macrotask flush (1 in 5 runs); it now asserts from a later popstate listener.
Round 2 reviewed round 1's own fix diff, which is where a fix round does
its damage. It found 15 issues in 792 lines — a much higher density than
round 1 found in the whole epic — and most were regressions round 1
introduced. So this follows the rule rather than fighting it: revert the
fixes whose mechanism was wrong, narrow the ones whose guard was too
broad, and stop reaching for a third variant.
REVERTED, because the mechanism does not work:
- The `inert` menu item. Round 1 swapped a native `disabled` for
`aria-disabled` so a row's "why is this off" tooltip could be reached.
floating-ui's list navigation skips `aria-disabled="true"` exactly as it
skips `disabled` (isListIndexDisabled) — and AnchoredPopover's own
comment, written before this branch, already said so. The swap fixed
nothing and made the mouse worse: without native `disabled` the row took
pointer events, the full active highlight and DOM focus, then no-opped
on click. The underlying finding is logged where the prop was, unfixed
and honest: the reason has to go somewhere a disabled row is not.
- `useContextMenu` owning the focus restore. Turning floating-ui's
returnFocus off platform-wide traded one bug for two: Playlists spreads
triggerProps on a bare <tr>, so restoring to it is a spec no-op and
Escape stranded focus on <body>; and with dismissOnScroll now on, the
restore's plain focus() scrolled the row back into view, undoing the
scroll that closed the menu. Patching that needs three more guards on
one fix. The original bug — the rail's rename field dying on arrival —
is fixed at the field instead: it focuses from an effect, which is
scheduled after the microtask that was blurring it.
NARROWED, because the fix was right and the guard was not:
- PlexPlayer's Backspace deferred to `anyLayerAbove`, but the player's own
gear and tracks menus register layers via useDismiss — so Backspace
stopped closing them and did nothing at all. Only the cheat sheet and
the palette own that key, so it names them.
- `historyDepth = 0` also desynced the counter from overlays the
navigation does NOT unmount (About and ReleaseNotes live outside the
page column), leaving one Back to both navigate and close them. The
entries are marked buried and consumed silently by reconcile instead.
- The move's error toast fired for every status, so a transport fault
surfaced twice on top of req's own dialog. Scoped to 403/404.
- The palette's moved-pointer guard could not judge the FIRST move of a
session and went stale across a close. `e.movementX/Y` asks the browser
directly and needs no state.
- `useKeyScope("contextMenu")` runs once per hook, and the Playlists page
mounts two — so the cheat sheet rendered the chords twice under a
duplicated React key. The scope stack dedupes.
- The `enabled:hover:` sweep missed the half that lives in CSS, so a
disabled glass button still lifted. `.glass-hover:not(:disabled):hover`.
- ShareDialog's migrated buttons passed a colour className that the
variant's own colour class outranks under clsx, so Revoke hovered
neutral and a password-protected link looked unprotected. The colour
goes on the icon, as the Copy button beside them already did.
- `matchesShortcut` took an untyped id and ids are only unique within a
scope, so `back` would have answered for the wrong player. Keyed on
scope + id, both literal.
And the systemic one: round 2 reverted eight of round 1's behaviour fixes
as a single mutation and all 763 tests still passed. Round 1 tested the
three fixes that were easy to test and none of the rest. So the guards
with the widest blast radius are pinned now, each mutation-checked to
fail for its own reason: the global keymap's repeat/allowInInput/disabled
handling (a new dom test), the cheat sheet bound to the real
useContextMenu rather than a scope stub, the scope dedupe, the history
burial, and the Button accessible-name union — whose @ts-expect-error
fixtures turn a widened type into a red typecheck lane.
The chipLane contract test that round 1 rewrote to count per lane counted
the import line as a lane, giving every file one free mirror — so the
exact hole it was rewritten to close was still open. Mutation-checked
both ways this time.
Finishes round 1. Part 1 took the runtime bugs; this takes the prose that
had gone false and the three "the comment says so" gaps behind it.
CLAUDE.md is auto-loaded into every agent session and ui/README.md is
not, so an architecture paragraph that still described a flat components
bag was the most expensive stale sentence in the repo: the next agent
adding a popover reads it, sees no platform layer, and writes the generic
component into components/ — the invisible-layer failure this epic exists
to end. It now names components/ui/ and says the boundary is lint-enforced.
The canonical-patterns table gained the three rows the epic established:
ui/Button over a hand-rolled <button>, a keymap row over a private keydown
listener, and disabled-when-busy vs inert-when-inapplicable.
ui/README.md's inventory was written in this branch's first commit and
never learned about CommandPalette, ContextMenu/useContextMenu,
KeyboardHelp or gridColumns — in a section whose own closing rule is that
a second component painting the same thing is how the last inconsistency
happened. It also claimed "everything is rem-derived" while VirtualGrid's
minCol/GRID_GAP are deliberately px; that is now stated as the exception
it is, and a new section records which promises here are tests rather
than sentences.
Three contracts stopped being prose:
- A text-less Button must carry a name. "Required for iconOnly" was a doc
comment, which is why the migration shipped two nameless icon buttons
through eight green lanes. It is a union now, covering both spellings
(iconOnly, and size="icon"/"icon-sm"), satisfied by label, aria-label or
title. It caught one more on the way in: Banner's dismiss took an
optional dismissTitle, so it could render unnamed — it falls back to
common.close now.
- gridColumns' gutter arithmetic. Every existing assertion survived
replacing floor((w + GAP) / (minCol + GAP)) with the naive
floor(w / (minCol + GAP)): the fixed widths agree, the capped cases are
cap-bound, and the loops compare columnsFor against itself. Pinned at
the exact-fit boundaries where the two first disagree (536 and 828).
- ShareDialog's link row. Only Copy was migrated in S1, leaving one 2rem
button between two 1.75rem ones — and on a coarse pointer .touch-target
grew only the migrated one to 2.75rem while the destructive Revoke
stayed small.
Also: the maxCols docstring said 8 columns of 384px where the test it
shipped with asserts 369.
- CLAUDE.md: new "Collaboration" section (plan-first, options-with-marked-
optimal-and-why, mockups for design decisions, challenge unsound requests,
visual UAT before done, terse otherwise).
- CLAUDE.md: clarify release is user-owned in timing, agent-run in execution.
- CLAUDE.md + docs/development.md: document the ruff format --check gate step
(already enforced in .gitea/workflows/check.yml, was missing from the docs).
- CLAUDE.md: refresh the stale footer to point at the now-existing
docs/development.md and backend/app/README.md.
The codebase is fully AI-authored and developed across many agent sessions; the
canonical conventions have lived only in a private memory store, which the
2026-08-17 review flagged as a real gap (unwritten rules → asymmetric fixes and
comment-vs-code drift, e.g. the cancelled/canceled literal bug).
Add a short, auto-loaded rules-of-the-road: the local gate (never merge/ship
red, no --skip), the trunk workflow and no-AI-co-author commit rule, the
one-way architecture shape, a canonical-pattern table (the review's §6
consistency choices), and the house rules learned from real bugs. Kept
deliberately thin; slims to a pointer once docs/development.md lands.
